he Lufkin News became a member of the Southern Newspapers Inc. family on June 1, 2009, when the Houston-based community newspapers company purchased the daily newspapers in Lufkin and Nacogdoches. The Lufkin newspaper in 2007 celebrated its 100th anniversary. It now has a Sunday circulation of roughly 13,000 newspapers and a daily circulation of about 10,400. The newspaper's primary coverage area is Angelina County, which has a population of about 80,000 people. The Lufkin News in 1977 won the Pulitzer Prize for public service for stories about abuses in military recruiting and training. Southern Newspapers and its affiliated companies operate 17 newspapers, with 11 in Texas, four in Alabama and two in Georgia. The company is owned by the Walls family of Houston.
